70’s fever at Handmade By Me

I was so taken with this 70’s inspired shoot of some of Handmade By Me‘s latest products, styled and shot by Kristy Snell of Delisous.

Prawn cocktail and flamingos, grapefruit and proteas, peas and prickly pears, and green jelly and alphabet soup, with a quirky combination of 70’s style dining – I’ve always loved the retro look and feel and I couldn’t be more into these pics! Plus, the locally-made products are fabulous too.

What Poetry has in-store for summer

Yesterday I attended the launch of the Poetry ss2017 collection of clothing, footwear and home wear. They have got it so right, encapsulating all the feels of this season through the celebration of “new growth”.

The launch was like walking into a neglected meadow – a bombardment of greenery, blossoms and a sense of calm.

“As days get hotter and we enter high summer, we increasingly want clothes that are comfortable, feminine and above all effortless,” said Mari Lochner, Poetry Buyer. “We also noted the growing resistance to previous seasons’ focus on fast fashion and heeded shoppers’ demand for quality items and classic cuts that will last for many seasons to come.”

The entire spring/summer offering will be available in Poetry stores and at www.poetrystores.co.za from this month.

I got creative with nature too, designing my own arrangement of beautiful, wild greenery all in the theme of summer and new life…

Pichulik launch s/s 2017

… and it’s better than ever.

Their spring/summer 2017 collection has been launched in conjunction with the second #PichulikByNadya resort wear collection, and their second collaboration with Cape Town brand Espadril.

Gone are the vibrant blues, reds and yellows, replaced by smooth metal and a restricted palette of natural colours – dusty pinks, soft sand colours, black and white offset by gold wrapping and polished metals.

Because many of the materials are organic –coral, shell, horn – no two pieces are the same.

The jewellery is complemented by the second PICHULIK by Nadya von Stein clothing collection. “The garments are inspired by the travelling garments of the ’30s and are made from hand-dyed hemp in natural hues. The lines are clean and the focus is on function as much as fashion,” says Von Stein.

Feminine and ideal for a South African sumer. The spring/summer 2017 collection will be available online at pichulik.com on 14 October 2016 and at the PICHULIK stores in the V&A Watershed as well as AKJP Collective in Cape Town.

the shirt-under-your-dress trend

This classic 90s trend has crept back into street style. It’s a way of wearing your party dresses during the day. It’s also perfect if you have spaghetti straps or uncomfortably low cut dresses… how will you wear yours?

I’ve got inspiration for a whole new way of wearing my wardrobe. Hooray for practical trends!

Salon 58 – Awaken Grace

We cannot get enough of these gorgeous photos from Jackie Burger’s latest soiree at Salon 58. As usual it was elegant and utterly charming, exploring grace in all its manifestations to uncover a way of thinking that is unfettered by time, seasons and age.

Enjoy the beautiful pictures and inspirational learnings from this unique morning at a special place in Stellenbosch…

STYLE: THE WHITE SHIRT

Since making its first public appearance in 1779, compliments of Marie Antoinette, the white shirt has never gone out of fashion. The clean cuts we know today have evolved, like the trench coat, from menswear and this piece has become a symbol of status. Nothing signals the wearer’s character, attitude and intent quite like a white shirt. This is why Jackie, together with HABITS, presented a selection of classic white shirts. ‘A white shirt allows the women to speak louder than the clothes.’

MAKE-UP: THE ICONIC RED LIP

The perfect crimson pout is a powerful symbol of female beauty and has, like women, evolved into more than a one-size-fits-all shade. Proof that age does not define a woman’s look nor her outlook is the 94-year-old Iris Apfel who collaborated with M.A.C Cosmetics on a range of sell-out red lipsticks. The M.A.C Cosmetics team was on hand on the day with their Lip Service bar and helped each guest find the red for her.

TASTE: AWAKEN THE SENSES

A five-course interactive food experience created by Slippery Spoon, courtesy of Woolworths Food, brought home the magic of awakening all five of the senses – hearing, taste, smell, touch and sight – and ultimately led to discovering the most powerful sense of all, intuition.

HAIR: THE RETURN OF THE CURL

Award-winning Redken Stylist Dawid Kriel unpacked the return of the curl and demonstrated the possibilities of greys, silver and platinum, hair colours that are increasingly seen on fashion spreads and the runways today. He showed how to wear natural grey with confidence and, for the more daring, how to go all-out platinum.

CONVERSATIONS: AN ACT OF KINDNESS

Jackie, together with her collaborators and guests, examined the process of conscious eve-olution with Dr. Yvette de Villiers in a conversation that centered around grace as a way of being and behaving. ‘To practise acting in a graceful way toward all beings at all times requires an incredible level of awareness and mindfulness to others and to our environment.’

Win with Storytime Club (because reading is rad)

As you probably know, Liza and I have a business called Storytime Club. It’s a subscription-based book club for kids aged 0 – 6 years old, and we’re really proud of it.

To celebrate all the glory of winter, and cuddling up on the couch with a good book, we are giving away a month’s subscription to Storytime Club worth R299. Your child will get three gorgeous, age-appropriate books delivered to your door, hand picked by us (both mamas and trained journalists, as well as devoted bookworms). We understand that not much can beat the excitement of receiving a package through the post (aka courier… same difference right?) and we are so pleased to be able to bring this joy to a new generation of children.

26 May

To enter, all you have to do is upload your favourite photo of your little one/s reading, either via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Don’t forget to tag us and use the hashtag #readingisrad, then tell us here that you have done so. Good luck!

Competition is open to residents of the Western Cape only and closes on 14 August. You will be notified by mail.

Calling all corporates and individuals – Dedicate 67 minutes to stop hunger now

For 450 000 vulnerable children, giving 67 minutes of your time for Nelson Mandela on Wednesday, 13 July can stave off their hunger for as long as a year.

Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa and Sun International’s GrandWest Casino are gearing up to pack 450 000 meals that will benefit children at the Early Childhood Development Centres supported by Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa.

The initiative forms part of Stop Hunger Now’s global campaign to mark International Mandela Day by packing and distributing meal boxes to those in need. Each meal box contains 36 meal bags, which in turn contain six meals each. Meal bags are planned to deliver optimal nutrition to children. The bags are packed with rice, soya, soup mix and a vitamin sachet containing 23 essential vitamins and minerals.

Between 8.30am and 5pm, GrandWest’s Market Hall will be transformed into a streamlined packing facility with 30 production lines consisting of 20 volunteers each. In total, 600 volunteers, organised into 150 three-member teams working four shifts, will pack a total of 12 500 meal boxes containing 36 meal bags in each.

2015 Stop Hunger Now campaign with Mervyn Naidoo, GM at Sun International's GrandWest Casino

Heidi Edson, Sun International Group Socio-Economic Development Manager said, “We appeal to Capetonians, and especially to other corporate companies based in Cape Town, to join us in making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children. From our privileged position it is often difficult to imagine what it must be like to go to bed hungry every night, but for 3-million South Africans this is a reality. Please help us to make this challenge a reality, and to ensure that 450 000 children can stop worrying about where their next meal will come from”.

Explaining the registration process, Saira Khan CEO of Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa said, “An entry fee of R10 000 will be levied for each corporate team of 20 people. This money will be used to buy the dry ingredients and to cover the basic cost of the packaging. Individuals wishing to participate can do so for a donation of R500. Pre-registration can be done either online via http://www.stophungernow.org/south-africas-million-meal-challenge-for-mandela-day/, or by emailing events@stophungernowsa.org to request a registration form.”

Four two-hour packing sessions have been planned for the day but will be extended to a fifth session. Once packed, the meals will be stored at the Stop Hunger Now warehouse, to be distributed over the next 12 months.
