skincare routine

I’ve had a few conversations lately with a selection of different friends who all seem to be practising the same skincare routine as me, bar one or two small differences. I’m not saying this routine is the best, because I don’t think my skin is one of those that people look at and think, wow… but this simple routine has kept my skin free of blemishes, healthy and in the best condition it’s ever been. So I thought it may be good to share it.

Here’s the lowdown…

  1. Cleanse morning and evening with Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Face Wash
  2. Apply Cetaphil Moisturising Cream and Bioderma SPF 50+ Tinted
  3. Apply make-up
  4. In the evening before going to bed, apply AHA Cream after cleansing

Yup, that simple. And effective! Sometimes I use almond oil on my face too, it’s natural and nourishing. Plus, a good facial every 4-6 weeks doesn’t hurt either. When I struggled with bad skin in my 20s, my dermatologist put me onto Cetaphil and told me to use SPF 50 on my face every day, no matter the weather, and I have never ever looked back.

How does your skincare routine work for you?

blissed out at the four seasons westcliff spa

We wish we could have whisked ourselves away to experience the utter bliss of the newly revamped spa at the Four Seasons Westcliff Hotel, but alas, our trusty Joburg correspondent Ruth Tanser, had to step in for us 🙂 Ruth says we have the ocean and she has The Westcliff, so all is fair.

Here’s what Ruth had to say about her experience…

I’m a mom to three boys (two of which are 10-month-old twins!), so I was really looking forward to some pampering at The Westcliff. As I pulled up to the gates of the hotel, the staff greeted me enthusiastically. I was shown where to park and even offered a lift to the spa in a golf cart – incase I was wearing heels. As soon as I stepped into the spa I started to feel relaxed – even more so once I had my fluffy gown and soft rubber slippers on. I didn’t even have to worry about a locker key as the new lockers use a nifty code system. While I waited for my lovely therapist Noni, I took some time out in the relaxation lounge which overlooks the beautiful infinity pool and a canopy of trees. It was a perfect autumn day and as I sipped on some freshly brewed Honeybush, Coconot and Mango tea and read some magazines, I felt like I was in heaven and I hadn’t even had my treatment yet!

I opted for the back, neck, shoulder and scalp massage to relieve the tension in my upper body. Noni seated me and began with a welcoming foot washing ceremony. She offered me a warm peppermint-scented towel, which acts as an invigorant, and she then immersed my feet in cucumber and salt-infused water before scrubbing them gently. My massage was brilliant and Noni was careful to check whether she was applying the correct pressure and if I was comfortable. It ended with an incredible scalp massage which is always my favourite part.

As it had been recommended to me to try out the ice scrub and steam room after my massage I was quite happy to acquiesce. The spa has separate sauna and steam room facilities for men and women. What a way to end off my treatment – I felt refreshed and invigorated! Unfortunately time was running out and even though I was sorely tempted by the Jacuzzi and infinity pool, I had to head back to my boys.

Throughout the entire two hour experience I felt incredibly pampered and left feeling utterly relaxed and rejuvenated. Thank you Four Seasons Westcliff Spa, what a treat!

right now we’re loving…

Bright and early mornings, balmy days and warm evenings… we love summertime. Here are a few things making these delicious days even better for us right now.

L’Occitane‘s new fragrance collection is sublime. Created by Olivier Baussan (L’Occitane founder) and Pierre Hermé (an extraordinary pastry chef with a memory for flavours and scents) it has two offerings – Jasmin Immortelle Neroli and Pamplemousse Rhubarbe – each as fresh as the first light of day. Our favourite has to be Jasmin with its Immortelle essential oil from Corsica, head notes of pink pepper and lemon, heart notes of jasmine, immortelle, neroli and orange blossom and base notes of amber, white wood and musk. So fresh!

Pichulik’s S/S 16 Lena collection is perfectly described by the designer Katherine-Mary Pichulik herself. She states: “This collection is for the woman who has a sense of humour and a lust for travel. She collects a trousseau of objects to mark her travels and memories, and prizes experiences over appearances. The pieces are therefore effortless, unapologetic and designed to follow the wearer’s movements. They balance bold and soft to make a statement without being loud.”

You can see the rest of the collection here. It’s amazing.

A bright, bold lip makes everything better. The Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Striking Spectaculaire is our current fave. It glides on smoothly, has a subtle mint flavour and stays on for ages.

And how sweet is this video that Revlon just launched with their Love Study campaign, proving that a beauty ritual can improve a women’s love life?

Lastly, who is heading to Kamers at Webersburg this weekend? We’re hoping to get there and can’t wait to see all the exciting stalls. One we’re definitely making a stop at is Handmade by Me. Designer, Sera Holland, has a range of new printed fabrics (see here for a sneak peek, we love the prickly pears!) that she will be unveiling with a host of products like tea towels and cushions. One of the products we can’t wait to see are the ‘Big 5’ reusable placemats for kids that can be turned into face masks when you’re done with them. So cool!

freckle face

I have freckles… not a lot, just a light sprinkling across my nose and cheeks. I’ve had them since I was a little girl. And now my kids have them too. Even my two beautiful nieces. I’ve never not liked my freckles, but some people can’t stand theirs. I think freckles are beautiful, quirky, unique. I love the quote, ‘a girl without freckles is like the night without stars’.

Do you have freckles? Do you love them and embrace them or try to hide them?

When I did a bit of research about freckles and make-up, I was sad to see so many articles giving people advice on how to remove their freckles! Please don’t try any of those things, and rather embrace your beauty. Here are some great make-up tricks for you freckle faces from Refinery 29 and StyleCaster. And if you don’t have freckles and would like to fake it, this video made me laugh!

Ordinary Skincare is extraordinary

Last week we were lucky enough to skip the pyjama / supper run and instead head to Clifton for sundowners, supper and the chance to get acquainted with new skincare range Ordinary Skincare. It was a welcome break from the old routine, and just so lovely to sip delicious Oneiric wine, meet some new faces and chat with the founders of this incredible brand, Dr Claire Jamieson and Robert Rae.

I have extremely dry, sensitive skin that seems to react to stress and a change in the weather and seeing as last week there was plenty of both for me, I was so glad that this range came into my life when it did.

Ordinary offers two ranges – Plainordinary and Extraordinary – depending on your skin type. They also don’t believe in too many unnecessary products, just the necessities, done well.

The Ordinary Day Cream SPF 30 encompasses the philosophy of simplicity in a skincare routine. Looking after your skin need not be complicated (or expensive) but it does need to be effective.

Sun protection should be our number one priority. Remaining disciplined about applying sunscreen is a habit we all know we should adopt in order to prevent sun damage and rapid ageing. But as life is incredibly busy, we don’t have time for extensive skincare routines.

Ordinary Skincare are about making life easier for us, which is why the moisturiser doubles as a sunscreen for easy use and application.

Ordinary Skincare Day Cream SPF 30 contains healthy, natural antioxidants like Green Rooibos and Grape seed Oil. The moisturising properties of Olive Oil and Shea Butter, along with co-enzyme Q10 gives additional soothing and antioxidant protection to soften and smooth the skin.

This Day Cream SPF 30 protects and moisturises skin throughout the day and is ideal for those with sensitive skin. The subtle fragrance and the effortless, soft glow is a natural bonus! You can buy it online for R302, along with the rest of the range.

We’d highly recommend you get yourself acquainted with this incredible brand!

The SA Beauty Blog Awards

We were very honoured to be shortlisted for the Reader’s Choice category at the inaugural 2015 SA Beauty Blog Awards, held last weekend in Rivonia.

We sadly couldn’t make the ceremony, but not wanting to miss out we enlisted the help of Ruth Tanser – our longtime friend and mama of three small boys, including (brand new) twin babies! We actually couldn’t believe it when she said yes. Here’s us thinking that having given birth to twins two months previously she wouldn’t be up for trekking across Joburg on a rainy night, but not so. She was super keen for a fun night out on the town. So much respect!

Thanks for being such a glam representative Ruth (aka) Supermama.

Check out her version of the event below:

On a stormy Joburg evening I set off for the SA Beauty Blog Awards at the very glamorous Movida Night Club in Rivonia. I took along another new mommy that I had met in the Neonatal ICU as I reckoned we both needed some fun and a night out on the town (daddies on babysitting duty)!

We were very excited as I Heart Your Outfit had been shortlisted for the ‘Readers Choice Award’ and we’d been asked by Liza and Emily to represent them!

Our night began with a walk down the red carpet where we were handed our VIP nametags, ushered into the beautifully decorated venue and welcomed with a glass of bubbly and delicious nibbles.

The evening started with a very moving talk by a representative from the cancer charity Look Good…Feel Better. Not only will all the proceeds from the awards be donated to them, but the awards will also help to raise awareness for this wonderful charity.

Then came time for the main event – the awards ceremony! The excitement in the room was palpable. It was wonderful to see how supportive the bloggers were of each other and everyone cheered wildly as the respective winners were announced! The very beautiful Liezel from 9 Lives took home three of the awards including ‘Best Overall blog’, but sadly (for us) I Heart lost out to Jo’burgs Darling in The Readers Choice Category.

After the awards had wrapped up we toasted ourselves, took a few more selfies (first time using a selfie stick) and chatted to the lovely Kirsten from Easihair pro – oh to have locks like that! We also nabbed two of the scrumptious TanOrganic (sponsor of the awards) cupcakes on our way out… for our littles (of course!)
