prepping for summer with a paraffin pedi

It’s that time of the year when you slip your feet into sandals for the first time in months and think, yikes I need a pedicure. I had such a moment the other day so I went to L at beauty for an indulgent treat.

The paraffin pedi is extra moisturising and perfect for the beginning of sandal season.

You get the usual wash, buff and massage, then you dip your feet into a vat of hot paraffin. Sounds painful, but it’s so relaxing I almost instantly fell into a deep sleep. The paraffin dries and forms a waxy layer on the skin. Feet are then wrapped in plastic and booties to keep them toasty and left for a couple of minutes. The therapist pulls off the plastic and the wax just slides off with it, leaving your feet soft and ready for the world. Bliss!

It’s relaxing and indulgent and totally affordable. Lisa-Marie at L at Beauty in Diep River is offering a special for R220 until the end of October. Call to book on 021 712 4318.

the fantastic foxbox

Last week we ventured out in the cold, wet weather to the launch of The FoxBox – a nifty mobile nail service that comes to you wherever you are – taking the hassle out of finding the time, running late and all that extra hassle. Whether it’s a corporate office, a home pamper just for you or even a party for you and your friends, The FoxBox are your go-to girls.

The launch was held in a beautiful cosy house in Constantia, when we arrived we were handed a pair of slippers to pad around in. So much more comfortable than boots! We chatted to our media friends while quaffing champagne, eating macaroons by MaMere, the most gorgeously decorated biscuits by Roxy Floquet and sipping on heavenly tea by Tea Pigs – I paired my popcorn tea (amazing!) with a vanilla macaroon (or two) and it was bliss. Then we each got our turn for a manicure by the lovely foxers. I chose a colour called Tropix in the hope of bringing back that blissful winter sunshine we’d been experiencing before the horrid rain. Emily went for a gorgeous deep red.

All in all, a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, we are so excited about this concept. You can find out more about The FoxBox on their website. Please let us know if you make use of them, and how your experience was.

Here’s to well deserved beauty time!

beauty secrets we learnt from our moms

Yay, yay it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday. Double the fun to be able to celebrate our precious mothers and get spoilt by our own families too. Being a mom is no mean feat, but it’s also the most rewarding job on the planet.

mothers day

This year, we’re going to share some of the beauty secrets our moms have passed down to us in their daily beauty regimes.

“As a little girl, I always remember my mum slathering on the body cream every night after her bath. Today, she still religiously moisturises from top to toe before she goes to bed, and her skin is gorgeous. I will admit that I am not as dedicated to the task as my mom, but I do make the effort to keep my skin as soft and silky as possible. With two kids, life is usually a bit of a mad rush so I’ve bought myself some Nivea In-Shower Moisturiser which works like a charm. Another secret from my mum is to always have a tube of hand cream in your handbag and on your bedside table. So I’m never without my Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I also remember my mum always smelling great, but never overpowering a room. Her secret? A few subtle spritzes of her favourite scent on her pulse points, as well a little in her hair (which by the way is always impeccable). Try L’Occitane’s Jasmin & Bergamote EDT for a burst of floral freshness.” – Liza

“My mum has never been a big make-up wearer, but she’s always taken her skin very seriously. Her mum, my grandmother, is in her eighties and still has the most perfect alabaster skin imaginable and has passed that very English complexion down the line. One disadvantage is that this skin doesn’t fare well in the African sunshine and I brought my mother to actual tears burning in the sun when I was younger. She had to teach me that beauty doesn’t lie in peeling and blisters, but in celebrating the skin you have. I take sun protection very seriously now and have learnt from my mum that no make-up can beat a beautiful dewy, well-moisturised skin. We are utterly unfaithful to brands, willing to try anything that promises us beauty and eternal youth, but our strong line of French blood makes L’Occitane a firm family favourite. L’Occitane’s Divine Cream is the ideal anti-ageing cream for both of us. Natural and full of essential oils, it moisturises, lifts and defines. Yes please!” – Emily

If you still haven’t got your mom a gift, let L’Occitane help with their fun Mother’s Day Gift Finder.

We hope all of you amazing moms have a super day on Sunday!

good hair days

The ghd is the only product on the market that can transform your hair in such a short time. Flat ironing the life out of your locks is not the point here, it’s about styling with finesse. Thus, we learnt from a master a few weeks ago and will never refer to a ghd as a flat iron again.

Stacy Shea is a hairstylist and a ghd expert who taught Liza and I about more than just how to make a cute wave. There’s an art to using a styler as well as a few major no-nos. Like don’t use it when your hair is damp, and never without first applying a heat protector.

Stacy did my hair with a wave and it looked amazing for three days afterwards. No exaggeration. And she gave Liza’s poker straight hair some soft bouncy curls, so amazing. A ghd is a must-have for good hair days and good hair is a must-have for a good day… so basically a ghd will make you happy.

beauty pick of the week

I love pink blush. For ages, I used MAC Powder Blush in Desert Rose – a beautiful pink that popped on my cheeks. Then I dropped it and it shattered into a million powdery pieces *sob*. I had another blush in my make-up bag, which was more of a natural shade, that I hadn’t even touched. So I started to use that because I felt I couldn’t waste what I had on hand. But I was never 100% happy with the look.

Now I’ve discovered this blush… Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Cream Blush in Pink (surprise!). It’s a beautiful, summery fresh pink and I love it!

What’s your favourite blush colour? And what product do you use?

ghd

Tis the season to be jolly! You know what that means right? Parties galore, end of year office functions, summer sundowners… Of course, juggling all your last-minute work deadlines and wrapping up projects leaves you no time to glam it up when you need to go from boardroom to bar. But what if the makeover came to you? ghd are giving you the chance to win a fabulous hair and make-up makeover at your desk, so you don’t even have to leave the office!

Here’s how to enter: simply tweet a pic of your glamorous self with the #ghdpartygirl, copying @ghdsouthafrica in. If you win, you’ll have the chance to invite a work colleague to join you too.

For more ghd info, visit their Facebook page here.

Some rules:

  • The makeovers will take place from 4-6 December in Joburg and Cape Town
  • Every day, three winners and their friends will be treated to makeovers

Good luck!

in the smashbox studios

Last week we spent the morning with Smashbox and were introduced to their new product range. The team are understandably very excited about the new Always Sharp Liner, Halo Foundation and the More Than A Primer range.

The Always Sharp liner is like magic, we are told. It’s literally always sharp. No sharpeners, no shavings, no nothing. Just twist the lid to remove and voila! Pretty cool. Plus, the colour stays put the entire day.

I love eyeliner, but often get frustrated because I don’t know how to apply it correctly. Here is a very cool tutorial from Smashbox Studios in LA. It’s pretty foolproof. As long as you’re not trying to apply it with a baby on your hip as I was this morning.

The brand has also added to its extensive collection of Primers, with its Photo Finish Blemish Control Primer that treats breakouts and provides a perfect, clear canvas for your foundation. If you have oily skin or suffer from breakouts we can recommend this primer. It’s R390 and the liners are R200 available at Edgars, Foschini and Woolies stores.

We had the very fun experience of being professionally made up by the Smashbox make-up artists with professional photos taken by Russell Smith. Liza looks lovely, not too sure about mine. Anyway…!
