fat pants have never looked this good

This long weekend I have every intention of doing very little. There will be a bit of exercise, a bit of socialising, but other than that I hope to become better acquainted with my couch, and Netflix. How utterly decadent.

Perfectly timed, Cotton On Body‘s Easter range was delivered into my inbox. Just because you’re ‘lounging’ doesn’t mean you want to look like a slob. I totally in love with all of this, just the right time for winter PJ’s too. Makes the prospect of those long, dark chilly months seem slightly less daunting… head down to Cotton On Body for some lovely Easter spoils. You (and your couch) will love them.

are you a sneakerhead?

Autumn is here, winter is coming… And that means a wardrobe update! This year it’s all about the sneaker for us. We still love our boots, but to be practical, as mamas who still want to look stylish, it’s sneakers all the way.

Last year Liza switched between a very old pair of pink Adidas trainers and an apple green pair of Reeboks, but this winter it’s time for an update. Emily’s just bought a pair of Supergas (see below) and she can’t believe it took her so long. They have barely left her feet since. She wears them with everything from jeans to office-style LBDs – basically her wardrobe has been revolutionised, in fact her entire ‘look’ on a day-to-day basis. Liza is still on the hunt!

What’s your favourite pair and how do you wear them?

greyton the magnificent

Last weekend, the girls went up to Greyton for the night. We planned it months ago – the planning is the most crucial bit! Luckily, I have a very wonderful aunt (on hubby’s side) who has a charming little cottage in Greyton which we were able to stay in. Thank you aunty Jan!

Margie and Emily trying to get cellphone reception

It’s not a far drive from Cape Town and once you get to this amazing little town, time literally slows to a snail pace. No rushing to bath kids, make supper, check emails, finish work etc. We decided that we weren’t going to even think about cooking one thing, and the only food I packed was rusks, hot cross buns, coffee, tea and bubbles! When we arrived, we opened the cottage windows and the shutters, popped the bubbles, plonked ourselves down on the patio and that’s where we stayed for the rest of the afternoon. Listening to the birds, the wind in the trees, the absolute stillness… special moments indeed.

It’s not necessary to drive anywhere in Greyton, everything is within walking distance so when we started to get a bit hungry, we made our way to the main street where all the restaurants and pubs are located. Walking in Greyton is one of my favourite things to do. Every single garden is just overflowing with pretty blooms and creepers and trees. Some immaculate, some wild and overgrown, but all breathtaking. It really is something to behold. We ended up at Searle’s where a boereorkes event was happening that night. We didn’t end up staying for the jol, but just ate our supper and ambled back home to sleep! Searle’s is always busy – definitely one of Greyton’s more popular restaurants, but there are many beautiful other places to go too.

Sunday morning we woke to the sound of rain. We hung out in our PJs, drank coffee and ate rusks. Emily and I headed out for a run – invigorating in the rain! – then we ended our girls’ getaway at Via’s for breakfast.

I’m so in love with this little village, if you’ve never been, you absolutely have to make the time to visit. It offers everything you need – mountains, rivers, horses, country lanes, great restaurants, a bustling Saturday morning market, shops of all kinds – second-hand charity, chocolate, candle, clothing etc – galleries, a beauty spa, wellness retreats and best of all, a shop called Willow & Bailey (named after my and Emily’s daughters’ – not really, actually after the owner’s dogs, but still!).

Thank you to the boys who held the forts back home and brace yourselves, we’re planning many more of these getaways 🙂

cement interiors

We’re still deciding what kind of pod / small space we want to build on our farm in the Karoo. We love the idea of the pod-idadla – although we may need a bit more space than the one featured on their website. I prefer not to think too much about all the aspects of building, paying and the logistics of getting everything up there etc… It’s way more fun to dream about the interior. I revisited my ‘karoo farmhouse inspiration’ Pinterest board the other day and was surprised at the amount of cement interiors I’d chosen. I love the idea of using cement as a focal point in a home and spunking up this very raw material.

emerging creatives – using ppc cement

We love the idea of using cement as an art form. At the latest PPC Imaginarium Awards, young talented artists and designers were awarded for their expressive use of cement as a primary base or material in their creations. We especially liked the winners in the jewellery and fashion sectors…

In jewellery, winner Mignon Daubermann was inspired by the anatomy of the body where she designed two rings replicating the shapes and forms of human bones.

And in fashion, winner Hester Erasmus used exaggerated A-line silhouettes, mixing PVC plastic with cement pieces for her collection.

All rather interesting, don’t you think?

Look out for our cement-inspired interiors post later this week…

frame hunter

In the last two years, my kids have snapped the arms off two pairs of my glasses. My most recent pair of Burberry frames were the latest casualty and for the last month I have been wearing them with the broken arm stuck on with washi tape.

What with moving house and trying to get settled, I have just been going with the Washi tape look for now (I can swap it to match my outfit) but the novelty is wearing off.

Inspired by Kamini Pather, who recently Instagrammed herself in her gorgeous new Oliver Peoples, I have been searching for the right pair. OM actual goodness, it’s hard. The general rule is to go according to the shape of your face – round, square, oval or heart etc. But I don’t know what shape my face is. Should you go alone and make a decision based on your gut, or do you take friends or your partner and listen to their opinion? My instinct tells me you go alone and you take your time, research the styles that suit your face shape and get something that will still look on trend in 5 years. Here’s hoping I make the right choice. Heaven knows I’ve had enough practice, toddlers and reading glasses should never be left alone in the same room…
