oh so pretty

Sometimes we receive an email that makes us sit up and take a bit more notice than usual. Like when the Winter 2015 Lookbook from Sitting Pretty arrived in our inbox. Every single piece is just perfection. That cape! Designer Emma Londgen says ‘the collection was inspired by the alternatingly soft and striking winter lights and a strong desire for softness and cocooning’. We like that. We also like that Sitting Pretty are passionate about ethical trading and integrity and each piece is designed and manufactured in Cape Town using natural fibres such as organic hemp and organic cotton.

a piz buin summer

The first Monday of the school holidays was like, way hot. I had just received some lovely Piz Buin products (my all time favourite sun protection) and I got a spontaneous urge to close up my laptop and take my kids down to the beach. So I did…

I envisioned us on a blanket with buckets and spades, building castles and enjoying the sun and the beautiful surrounds. What I got however was a nasty taste of reality – never go to the beach on the first hot day of the school holidays! It was packed, there were roadworks so it took ages to get there, there was no parking and I realised that I was going to have to be a bit more strategic when it came to fun in the sun this holiday.

Happily my sis-in-law messaged to say she was taking the kids to the river in Bishops Court. It’s a gorgeous little bubbling brook hidden away from the bustle of the city and so I did an immediate u-turn and headed there. It was idyllic. The kids searched for river crabs and skimmed stones, while the babies wandered around in nothing but their Havaianas and loads of Piz Buin to protect them from the sun.

What a city we live in!

hello forever 21

I remember my first visit to a Forever 21 store was back in 2011 when we were on holiday in New York. I stepped inside the Times Square store and literally did not want to leave. It was huge, overwhelming… and I left with nothing. Too many choices! So how exciting, just a few years later, to have a Forever 21 store right in my home town. Now I can go as often as I want, plus they have new stuff in store every week. I will admit that I’m not a big fan of ‘fast’ fashion, but sometimes a girl just needs a good, old-fashioned retail fix that won’t break the bank.

A few weeks ago Emily and I went to the exclusive opening of the store at Canal Walk. We were feeling tired, stressed, overworked, premenstrual (seriously!) and just not really in the mood for a shopping evening. But as soon as we walked through the doors we somehow forgot about all the stress and exhaustion and we turned into full on shopping mode. The fact that we each received R1000 to spend also helped. The store is big, with different shopping areas each tailored to a specific look plus a huge accessories area as well as shoes, underwear, active wear and everyday basics. At one stage I misplaced my voucher (remember I said we were tired?) and I retraced my steps but just couldn’t find it. Thankfully Emily had a clearer head on her and she marched straight over to where we had been trying on the hats and picked it up for me. Thank you friend!

the street store

I love the creativeness of people in this city.

Woodstock is a suburb of such extremes. Super trendy boutiques, restaurants and office space slam dunk in the middle of poverty stricken local community. Last year two advertising creatives, who came face to face with this juxtaposition of rich and poor on a daily basis, thought up The Street Store. It’s the world’s first ever rent-free, premises-free, free pop-up clothing store and it is a brilliant way to donate to the homeless so they can receive with dignity, choosing things they actually want and like.

Street Store poster boards with hangers are hung from fences over which donors can lay their clothes. Boxes are placed in a neat row for shoes and accessories. Watch the video to see it in action.

The concept has grown to see street stores being duplicated in the city streets of Brussels, Vancouver, San Diego and São Paulo, to name a few. More than 263 cities from around the world have signed up to host a Street Store.

So if you see these posters, give freely and generously.

oh dear megan

Oh Dear Megan, jewellery designer of note, has launched her beautiful 2014 Africana Collection.

This bold, multi-dimensional range continues with Megan’s trademark use of vintage, original South African coins, brass and sterling silver while incorporating diamonds and stone, which add a fresh dimension.

The energy of Africa is all over this collection and Megan says that she found inspiration in the vibrancy of the people and palettes right on her doorstep. Why look to Europe for inspiration when we have so much at our disposal right here? Love it!

My absolutely favourite are the fan rings. But each is designed to make a statement and I love them all.

“Africa is such a unique mixing pot and I love it! I would never want to be anywhere else!”
