start dreaming about the beach

It’s definitely not too early to start thinking about the beach. In fact, in Cape Town we’ve been enjoying some perfect spring beach days already. This summer I plan on taking the littles down to the beach as much as we possibly can. I can’t wait to feel the warm sand between my toes, breathe in that salty sea air and cool off in the ocean. There is just nothing better.

Here are a few must-haves on my beach list this season. Yes, there are lots of shoes but that’s not an issue is it?

it’s pants season

For some reason, I really struggle to wear dresses in winter. I feel too restricted by the layering of tights, dress, jersey, coat etc. So as soon as the weather turns cold and rainy, and I absolutely cannot leave the house baring skin, I turn to pants. All kinds of pants: high-waisted wide leg pants, tapered and cropped pants, skinny denims, boyfriend denims… Here’s some inspiration below.

We also have a whole bunch of gorgeous pants for sale in the I Heart Vintage store, too. Click here to take a look!

And almost always, my pants are paired with flats. Here are a few I have my eye on…

gotta get some culottes

Culottes may not be the easiest thing in the world to pull off, but they’re actually more flattering than you give them credit for. You’d think because they are billowy and wide that they’re going to create the same effect on your body, but the high waist and the way they fit when you put them on (almost like a midi skirt), actually streamline your look.

Dressed up in heels and a crop top (a little leg lengthening goes a long way) or down in trainers and a boxy t-shirt, you can’t go wrong in culottes. We’re certainly giving them a go this autumn.

I Heart Your Outfit

These perfect culottes are by Drotsky, the new collection from Elaine du Plessis which we had the pleasure of viewing at the Salon 58 launch this past weekend (more on that soon!)

how to wear slides

You might remember Emily’s sudden need for the Birk. Soon after that post we went online to order our Birks, then we had shopper’s anxiety and decided against them – it’s quite a lot of money to spend on what might be only very cool for one summer. So we left it. Until we saw Charlie May in her Adidas slides and fell in love – we are now both proud owners of our own Adidas slides. And if they’re only cool for one summer, it’s ok, they weren’t too pricey! The funny thing is, I used to have a pair of these when I was a teenager?!

So, how to wear them…

Slides are super versatile – they work equally well with laid-back boyfriend jeans, slick tailored trousers or a pretty skirt or dress. It’s really what makes you feel comfortable. A tip: try to always keep your jeans rolled or trousers cropped so that you’re showing a bit of ankle. And get a good pedicure 🙂

There are also a ton of different styles – single straps with buckles, two straps with buckles, one big strap, crossovers, white, black, leather, suede, metallic, stripes. Try a few on and go for the style that suits your feet the most. And you can find them pretty much anywhere: Green Cross, Woolworths, Country Road, Trenery, Witchery, Cotton On, Mr Price, Truworths

black and white is always right

Emily and I were shopping the other day when we realised that after 24 years of friendship and shopping together, we’ve finally grown up. No longer do we rush to the rails hanging with the season’s latest trends and buy the exact same items regardless of whether they suit us or not. Instead, we headed in different directions and straight to the grown-up basics – the pieces that we know look good, that we’re going to wear for a few seasons, that will last.

We also noticed there wasn’t much colour going on. We’re stripping things away and investing in classic blacks, whites, creams and greys. Okay, whites and creams aren’t very kid friendly but we’re going to make an attempt of it. We’re sticking by our new mantra: you can never go wrong in black and white. It’s timeless.
