macrame love

Last month I bought this very rad macrame plant hanger from Superbalist. I loved the idea of it but then once it arrived I wasn’t sure which plant to hang in it or even where to hang it at all.

I gathered some inspiration from Pinterest, finally made it down to the nursery to get a nice fern with lots of ‘spillage’ and then this weekend, we found the perfect place for it… the kids’ bathroom. I know you might find that weird but we have put plants all over the house – lounge, kitchen, our bedroom, kids bedrooms and playroom, so the bathroom seemed the perfect fit. The more plants in this house, the better!

And here’s what our macrame hanger looks like in the bathroom… what do you think? I like!

right now we’re loving…

Bright and early mornings, balmy days and warm evenings… we love summertime. Here are a few things making these delicious days even better for us right now.

L’Occitane‘s new fragrance collection is sublime. Created by Olivier Baussan (L’Occitane founder) and Pierre Hermé (an extraordinary pastry chef with a memory for flavours and scents) it has two offerings – Jasmin Immortelle Neroli and Pamplemousse Rhubarbe – each as fresh as the first light of day. Our favourite has to be Jasmin with its Immortelle essential oil from Corsica, head notes of pink pepper and lemon, heart notes of jasmine, immortelle, neroli and orange blossom and base notes of amber, white wood and musk. So fresh!

Pichulik’s S/S 16 Lena collection is perfectly described by the designer Katherine-Mary Pichulik herself. She states: “This collection is for the woman who has a sense of humour and a lust for travel. She collects a trousseau of objects to mark her travels and memories, and prizes experiences over appearances. The pieces are therefore effortless, unapologetic and designed to follow the wearer’s movements. They balance bold and soft to make a statement without being loud.”

You can see the rest of the collection here. It’s amazing.

SOL LE WIT GOLD (2)

A bright, bold lip makes everything better. The Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Striking Spectaculaire is our current fave. It glides on smoothly, has a subtle mint flavour and stays on for ages.

And how sweet is this video that Revlon just launched with their Love Study campaign, proving that a beauty ritual can improve a women’s love life?

Lastly, who is heading to Kamers at Webersburg this weekend? We’re hoping to get there and can’t wait to see all the exciting stalls. One we’re definitely making a stop at is Handmade by Me. Designer, Sera Holland, has a range of new printed fabrics (see here for a sneak peek, we love the prickly pears!) that she will be unveiling with a host of products like tea towels and cushions. One of the products we can’t wait to see are the ‘Big 5’ reusable placemats for kids that can be turned into face masks when you’re done with them. So cool!

magical madikwe

Last month, hubby and I headed off to Madikwe for a week in the bush – just the two of us! It would never have been possible if it wasn’t for my parents who moved into our house and assumed all responsibility without batting an eyelid (although I did write an extensive list). We’ll be forever grateful!

We love the bush and thought it would be good to explore somewhere we’ve never been, so we chose Madikwe. When booking our accommodation, it was overwhelming at the amount of lodges there are, but one really stood out for us – Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge – because it is the first lodge in SA to be wholly owned and managed by the nearby community. I’d highly recommend staying there if you’re looking to go to Madikwe anytime soon…

There’s something about the bush that just slows down your thoughts, stills your mind, lets you breathe in every special moment as if it’s going to last forever. Our daily ritual went a little something like this…

6am Wake up call, coffee and rusks

6.30am Game drive – the best part of the day. Watching the sun rise, this huge red glowing ball (from all the dust) was just magical. We spotted SO many animals, and Elliott our guide made sure we got as close as possible, sometimes too close for my liking. I’ve never seen so many elephants, and they’re my absolute best. Game drives lasted at least three hours and always included a coffee break with the most delicious buttermilk muffins you’ve ever tasted. Seriously. I’m definitely feeling the effects of all those muffins now 🙁

9.30am Breakfast on the deck – one morning a troop of baboons decided to have breakfast with us, and totally ransacked the buffet table. Never a dull moment.

10am – 2pm Relax – read, sleep, lie in the sun

2pm Lunch on the deck (we ate and we ate!)

3pm Game drive – the second best part of the day and this time we watched the sun set and we drank Amarula and ate biltong and chips.

6.30/7pm Supper on the deck.

8pm Lights out!

Can you imagine the serenity?!

As I type this, drowning in deadlines, it feels like a distant memory. But, it’s a good memory and I can’t wait to get back to the bush… it’s a special place that I cannot describe. All I can say is you have to experience it for yourself if you haven’t already.

slip-on sneakers

I think I’m going to be investing in a few pairs of slip-on sneakers for winter… It’s a good shoe for a busy mama. In fact, I’m just really stoked that sneakers in general are acceptable to wear.

lunch in the winelands // creation wines

This past weekend we went out to the Hemel en Aarde valley to have lunch at Creation Wines, a family day trip to end the holidays off in style. It was quite a drive (although beautiful) but well worth it when we arrived at the farm.

Road trip views

We were an hour early as we thought it might be nice to walk around a bit before we sat down, to let the littles burn off some energy after being in the car for a few hours. At the restaurant – The Tasting Room –Francois greeted us and suggested we go down to the cellar to do some wine tasting while we wait. He was very friendly and full of information as he escorted us to the cellar. We sat and tasted a few delicious wines (and put in a few orders too) before Francois came back down again to let us know our table was ready early. Creation have cleverly included a kids’ playroom in the restaurant, with books, blocks, toys and all sorts to keep little ones busy. Bailey and Robert were running back and forth from the room to our table, while we sipped on more wine. It wasn’t all laid-back and relaxing though, we were also both up and down a few times to make sure Robert didn’t keep running out the front door of the restaurant.

Playroom for the littles

For Bailey we ordered the Kids Surprise Pairing – the sweetest idea, which she loved. To start, she had a few grapes to pair with some grape juice. Then some dried banana as well as a fish cake and a spring roll to pair with some pineapple juice. And to end it off, some mini marshmallows and biscotti to drink with flavoured milk straws. So fun! Robert’s a little young for this so we just ordered him a cheese, tomato and ham toastie – he pulled out all the tomato, ate that and nothing else. Sigh! For our lunch we ordered the charcuterie platter for two as well as a cheese board to share. Delish.
