Salon 58 – Awaken Grace

We cannot get enough of these gorgeous photos from Jackie Burger’s latest soiree at Salon 58. As usual it was elegant and utterly charming, exploring grace in all its manifestations to uncover a way of thinking that is unfettered by time, seasons and age.

Enjoy the beautiful pictures and inspirational learnings from this unique morning at a special place in Stellenbosch…

STYLE: THE WHITE SHIRT

Since making its first public appearance in 1779, compliments of Marie Antoinette, the white shirt has never gone out of fashion. The clean cuts we know today have evolved, like the trench coat, from menswear and this piece has become a symbol of status. Nothing signals the wearer’s character, attitude and intent quite like a white shirt. This is why Jackie, together with HABITS, presented a selection of classic white shirts. ‘A white shirt allows the women to speak louder than the clothes.’

MAKE-UP: THE ICONIC RED LIP

The perfect crimson pout is a powerful symbol of female beauty and has, like women, evolved into more than a one-size-fits-all shade. Proof that age does not define a woman’s look nor her outlook is the 94-year-old Iris Apfel who collaborated with M.A.C Cosmetics on a range of sell-out red lipsticks. The M.A.C Cosmetics team was on hand on the day with their Lip Service bar and helped each guest find the red for her.

TASTE: AWAKEN THE SENSES

A five-course interactive food experience created by Slippery Spoon, courtesy of Woolworths Food, brought home the magic of awakening all five of the senses – hearing, taste, smell, touch and sight – and ultimately led to discovering the most powerful sense of all, intuition.

HAIR: THE RETURN OF THE CURL

Award-winning Redken Stylist Dawid Kriel unpacked the return of the curl and demonstrated the possibilities of greys, silver and platinum, hair colours that are increasingly seen on fashion spreads and the runways today. He showed how to wear natural grey with confidence and, for the more daring, how to go all-out platinum.

CONVERSATIONS: AN ACT OF KINDNESS

Jackie, together with her collaborators and guests, examined the process of conscious eve-olution with Dr. Yvette de Villiers in a conversation that centered around grace as a way of being and behaving. ‘To practise acting in a graceful way toward all beings at all times requires an incredible level of awareness and mindfulness to others and to our environment.’

Salon 53 – Lovely

Jackie Burger held Salon 58‘s fourth soirée for 2015 entitled Lovely, on Saturday 15 August 2015 at the P.J. Olivier Art Centre in Stellenbosch.

Lovely marked the beginning of Salon 58’s spring/summer soirées and centred around four aspects of a modern woman’s life – business, spirituality, beauty and fashion.

“Lovely, to me, is about upliftment, lightness, and enlightenment. The talks, the fashion and the entire experience were therefore a celebration of womanhood in all its lightness, something many of us forget in the course of our hurried lives,” said Jackie.

We were sad to miss this one. Even more so when we browsed through the beautiful images forwarded on by Salon 58’s PR maestro Jenna McArthur.

Pour a glass of wine, or brew a pot of tea tea, and feast your eyes on these pics. Such a treat for the soul…

salon 58 soirees

Last month, I headed to the Bare soiree at Salon 58 with my friend Alison. It was a fabulous morning! If you haven’t yet been to one of Jackie’s soirees, do yourself a favour and get a ticket for Noir, which is happening this Saturday. You can buy from webtickets, here.

Here are a few snaps from the Bare soiree…

ihc

All furniture and layout design was by Okasie

ihc

Loved the M.A.C presentation – the make-up artist (can’t remember her name!) was really funny and captivating

ihc

Tools!

ihc

Jackie spoke on how to build your wardrobe with the essential basics: Breton stripes, denim jacket, wide-leg trousers, sneaker loafers, skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans, white shirt, trench, pencil skirt, black heels, and of course lots of scarves. Loved this!

ihc

Maybe Corpaci made for a beautiful model

ihc

A talk by the owner of Santa Maria Novella – plus a chance to sniff and spray all these exquisite perfumes and potpourri

ihc

Me, wearing my inherited vintage fur (it was John-Louis’ grandmother’s fur, made by his grandfather!)

ihc

We all got to choose a flower and tie it to the installation in the dining hall

ihc

The most amazing food by Schoon de Companje – baguettes, seed wreaths, salmon gravadlax, cultured butter, couer a la creme, tea eggs, sweet and sour leeks and the most delicious chocolate terrine which I definitely had too much of (all washed down with Graham Beck Brut Zero!)

ihc

The long table where we all sat to feast

Too good!

salon 58 opening soiree

On Saturday we were thrilled to be among the 150 fashion insiders and media at the opening of Salon 58, Jackie Burger’s new venture.

The PJ Olivier Arts Centre in Stellenbosch, where Salon 58 has its offices, was the perfect setting for the event, which Jackie described as “a gathering of friends”.

“I have been planning this day for three years,” she said. “As everyone knows, I am an admirer of Coco Chanel, not just for her fashion but because she was a woman who was not afraid to take risks. Salon 58 is the expression of one of my dreams, to create ‘some place of magic’, as she once said, where we can kick off our shoes and connect while enjoying one of life’s ultimate pleasures, that of good company.”

We were treated to a fashion show featuring women who have each built a brand based on their originality and style, including Anet Pienaar Vosloo, Jena Dover, Jess van Wyk, Doreen de Waal, Pnina Fenster, Jenna Bruwer and Asanda Sizani. Also on display was the Salon 58 x Pichulik series of striking portraits shot by Kristin-Lee Moolman. The portraits of Anet Pienaar Vosloo, Jenna Bruwer, Doreen De Waal, Juanita Daniel, Jackie Burger, Mellissa Muringani and Lindiwe Suttle are mesmerising. Each wearing once-off earrings created by jewellery designer Katherine-Mary Pichulik.

The mesmerising Lindiwe Suttle opened the morning’s event with a moving rendition of La Vie en Rose accompanied by Stanislav Angelov on the accordion. It was a beautiful thing to behold and brought a tear to my eye. I was entranced.

Jackie’s long-time favourite designer, Elaine du Plessis, launched her new label Drotsky which we are particularly excited about. We have always been huge fans of Elaine (otherwise known as Olive) and her work and are so happy to see she is creating clothing again.

Also on show were a range of hand-woven scarves by designer Nicholas Coutts and hats by Joburg’s Simon and Mary. Milliner Dean Pozniak is currently working with Jackie to create a signature hat to be called the Jackie Burger, a process he calls “a labour of love”. Durban’s Dave de Witt contributed 12 pairs of Sk8 Shades sunglass frames made from reclaimed parquet flooring and skateboard material. Displayed alongside these were a selection of pure silk kimonos imported from Japan by Karen Ter Morshuizen that will form the basis for her new business set to launch soon. The kimonos precede WWII and have been woven and dyed by hand.

Jackie, who is known as a champion of new design talent, will showcase carefully selected items such as these at the salon where she will also host one-on-one tête-à-têtes (personal style consultations). Also on the calendar are seven soirees per year, each with its own theme and collaborators.
