we’re loving autumn/winter at poetry

We’re back from our holiday – from sunshine and beach weather to cold, blustery rainy days. At least we have the Poetry autumn/winter collection to look forward to, in stores from Friday 🙂

This season, expect a few pieces in cashmere and silk, plus details such as pleats, lace, quilting and embroidery. We love the pared down neutrals with the pops of colour too.

hello forever 21

I remember my first visit to a Forever 21 store was back in 2011 when we were on holiday in New York. I stepped inside the Times Square store and literally did not want to leave. It was huge, overwhelming… and I left with nothing. Too many choices! So how exciting, just a few years later, to have a Forever 21 store right in my home town. Now I can go as often as I want, plus they have new stuff in store every week. I will admit that I’m not a big fan of ‘fast’ fashion, but sometimes a girl just needs a good, old-fashioned retail fix that won’t break the bank.

A few weeks ago Emily and I went to the exclusive opening of the store at Canal Walk. We were feeling tired, stressed, overworked, premenstrual (seriously!) and just not really in the mood for a shopping evening. But as soon as we walked through the doors we somehow forgot about all the stress and exhaustion and we turned into full on shopping mode. The fact that we each received R1000 to spend also helped. The store is big, with different shopping areas each tailored to a specific look plus a huge accessories area as well as shoes, underwear, active wear and everyday basics. At one stage I misplaced my voucher (remember I said we were tired?) and I retraced my steps but just couldn’t find it. Thankfully Emily had a clearer head on her and she marched straight over to where we had been trying on the hats and picked it up for me. Thank you friend!

a thrifting afternoon

Emily and I have been so busy with work the past few months that we really haven’t had time to just hang out together. We’ll often meet for work stuff – which doesn’t happen nearly enough either – but we rarely just meet up to do some shopping and drink some coffee and just be together. When you’ve been friends for 23 years, these kinds of afternoons are very important. We love each other very much and when we don’t get to spend time together, we definitely feel it, even though we talk every day and run a business together.

So last week Thursday was bliss – we headed to Wendy’s Vintage Clothing in Observatory. We’ve driven past it countless times and never had the chance to go in. What a treasure trove. I found the most amazing black wide leg pants, a beautiful navy dress, a sequin vest; and Emily found an exquisite fur shrug. We then popped next door to Vintage Bazaar and were equally delighted. Emily picked up this beautiful navy blazer that we were both in awe of … turning it over, admiring the beautiful lining. Emily was about to try it on until the owner of the store politely informed us that it was actually hers. Oops!

We then headed for a refuel at Queen of Tarts before one final stop at Never New, a relatively new kid on the block that is packed with a rather wide range of vintage, from crochet blankets to Parisian capes, books to records, shoes to hats… it’s lovely but requires a lot of digging and rifling through racks for the good stuff.

Vintage hunting makes us happy.

PS: Look out for new stock in our I Heart Vintage store soon!

spree launches virtual pop-up

Online retailer spree is showcasing some of South Africa’s favourite designers, with the launch of their virtual pop-up shop, Designer Spotlight.

Now, sought-after local fashion is accessible to anyone in South Africa. Yay! Not only can shoppers find unique, locally designed pieces to buy, but they will also be able to really get to know the designers featured in the store through an inspiring shopping experience.

The lovely Chris Viljoen, fashion director of spree says, ‘We believe that it is important to try and make South African fashion available to everyone in the country. By carefully selecting the best on offer, and putting it online, available to shop, we believe that we will see growth in the number of people buying local and supporting the fashion industry.’ We agree Chris, local is so very lekker.
