outdoor art for the win

We love the new initiative by the V&A Waterfront to bring art to the public. They’ve given a number of sizeable outdoor artworks and sculptures permanent homes around their open spaces and public plazas. These artworks form part of their Art in Public Places Programme which has included artists such as Noria Mabasa, Cameron Platter, Claudette Schreuders and more.

Already one of the most iconic cultural hubs in the country, and soon to be the home of the incredible Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) opening in September 2017, the V&A Waterfront has made a substantial commitment to raising the public profile of art in South Africa. Included in this is the idea that the artistry of those exhibiting in Zeitz MOCAA should not be confined within the museum’s walls; instead, it should spill out onto the rest of the property, with the outdoor areas becoming something of an open air art gallery the public could appreciate.

What a great idea, and a nice way for little people to enjoy art as well (without annoying anyone in a quiet museum or gallery).

fun at the V&A Waterfront this December

Cape Town is just overflowing with awesomeness in December. There is literally no end to the things going on. The V&A Waterfront is obviously a major hotspot and if you have friends down for the holidays or just want to get the kids out for the day, these are the things you can look forward to at this Capetonian landmark!

Christmas Light Shows: Thursday, 10 and Friday, 11 December

VA - 2015 Festive Season (16)_RESIZED

The first day of extended trading hours, Thursday 10 December, will be marked by a Christmas Light Show to dazzle Victoria Wharf shoppers with a beautiful display of coloured light patterns, all set to Christmas-themed music, carols and performances to instil traditional Christmas cheer.

Light Shows will be held twice daily on Thursday, 10 December and Friday, 11 December, at 8pm and 9pm. The Light Show is new to this year’s V&A December schedule and aims to delight young and old alike.

Meet Santa: Wednesday, 16 to Thursday, 24 December (excluding Thursday, 17 December)

VA - 2015 Festive Season (1)_RESIZED

Santa will fly in from the North Pole to meet with his legion of young followers at the Victoria Wharf Centre Court on Wednesday, 16 December, between 11am and 12.30pm, and later return at the same time each day from Friday, 18 December to Thursday, 24 December.

With a ho-ho-ho and a belly full of fun, Santa will personally receive children’s letters and hear directly whether they believe they have been naughty or nice this year.

Carols, choristers and Christmas bands

VA - 2015 Festive Season (13)_RESIZED

The V&A Amphitheatre audiences can also get into a cheerful, festive spirit with an array of entertainment. Lovers of big bands and Christmas songs will appreciate the carols, choristers and Christmas bands scheduled to ring in the festive season at the V&A Amphitheatre the week before Christmas.

H&M hits SA!

We were super excited to attend the VIP media launch of H&M at the V&A Waterfront last week. It was massive! Every local celeb and media person we’ve ever known was there and the store was – literally – pumping.

It’s huge – two floors of fashion for women, men and kids, as well as a gorgeous home section. We basically walked through the doors and immediately started shopping. You’ll be glad to know, the prices are incredible.

Welcome to SA H&M, we are extremely glad you are here!

And on 18 October its doors will be open till 11pm and then every day thereafter from 9am-9pm. We can’t hardly wait!

Another lovely thing happened today… we saw the announcement from Jane Sews, one of our favourite local designers, that they’ll be releasing a range of shoes for little girls. Eeep!

how are the holidays going?

We’re about halfway through the winter holidays in Cape Town, and so far it hasn’t been too bad. Juggling work and a fun itinerary for the littles is no mean feat but we seem to have survived so far. This is what we’ve been up to…

  • Watching Noddy and Fantastic Mr Fox at the Artscape – their shows are always brilliant
  • Lots and lots of playdates 🙂
  • The Two Oceans Aquarium – always a winner
  • Snow White at Canal Walk
  • Disney on Ice
  • Holiday club at Virgin Active
  • Just chilling out at home!

I Heart Your Outfit

Other activities on the agenda include the Cape Wheel at V&A Waterfront as well as the Watershed Play Pad, maybe the Ice Slide at Cape Gate, a Table Mountain cable car ride, The Three Little Pigs at the Baxter Theatre, perhaps a movie or two or a picnic at Kirstenbosch Gardens? There’s lots to do! Let us know what you’ve been up to, so we can have some more ideas!
