lunch in the winelands // the table at de meye

For my birthday lunch earlier this month, I booked at The Table at De Meye. I’ve been wanting to visit for months! So on a sunny Saturday, hubby and I dropped the littles off with aunty for the night and made our way out to Stellenbosch. A whole day and night of alone time stretched out before us… such bliss.

When we arrived at De Meye, we made our way to the wine tasting room before we sat down at our table for two nestled under an enormous oak tree. We sipped on a crisp rosé/shiraz blend, chatted without having to worry about one little running off for miles and the other little constantly interrupting, and we ate like kings. I cannot even begin to describe how incredibly delicious the food was. Here’s a link to the chef Jessica’s post which can give you more detail! After lunch, we grabbed a blanket from one of the nearby benches, laid it out on the grass under our oak tree, and just soaked up some dappled afternoon sunlight. When we arrived home much later we both fell asleep for a few hours – late afternoon naps just don’t happen with children around and it was utterly bizarre to wake up at 6pm with not a worry in the world.

I cannot wait to visit The Table again, the menu changes every week as it’s depicted by the fresh produce that’s available at the time, so you’re guaranteed something unique. It’s an absolute must-visit!

lunch in the winelands // creation wines

This past weekend we went out to the Hemel en Aarde valley to have lunch at Creation Wines, a family day trip to end the holidays off in style. It was quite a drive (although beautiful) but well worth it when we arrived at the farm.

Road trip views

We were an hour early as we thought it might be nice to walk around a bit before we sat down, to let the littles burn off some energy after being in the car for a few hours. At the restaurant – The Tasting Room –Francois greeted us and suggested we go down to the cellar to do some wine tasting while we wait. He was very friendly and full of information as he escorted us to the cellar. We sat and tasted a few delicious wines (and put in a few orders too) before Francois came back down again to let us know our table was ready early. Creation have cleverly included a kids’ playroom in the restaurant, with books, blocks, toys and all sorts to keep little ones busy. Bailey and Robert were running back and forth from the room to our table, while we sipped on more wine. It wasn’t all laid-back and relaxing though, we were also both up and down a few times to make sure Robert didn’t keep running out the front door of the restaurant.

For Bailey we ordered the Kids Surprise Pairing – the sweetest idea, which she loved. To start, she had a few grapes to pair with some grape juice. Then some dried banana as well as a fish cake and a spring roll to pair with some pineapple juice. And to end it off, some mini marshmallows and biscotti to drink with flavoured milk straws. So fun! Robert’s a little young for this so we just ordered him a cheese, tomato and ham toastie – he pulled out all the tomato, ate that and nothing else. Sigh! For our lunch we ordered the charcuterie platter for two as well as a cheese board to share. Delish.

lunch in the winelands // middelvlei

I’m always loathe to say we’re starting a new ‘series’ of posts on the blog, as it’s quite a commitment to keep it up but Lunch in the Winelands is beneficial on so many levels so here we go…

We’ve got a list of wine farms we’re keen to visit but never any time to actually go out there and enjoy them! A couple of weeks ago we finally got to tick Middelvlei off the list. We booked for the Boere Braai lunch – doesn’t that sound yum? Middelvlei is situated very close to the Route 44 market, so it’s easy to find. They’ve got a lovely big sandpit for kids as well as plenty of lawn for running around, goats and chickens to feed, scooters to ride, marshmallows to toast on the fire and even a tractor ride (by prior arrangement).

The food was phenomenal. We started off with homemade potbrood cooked on the fire and served with pates and jams. We then moved onto the main course of braaibroodjies (also cooked on the fire), chicken kebabs, lamb chops, green salad, potato salad and pumpkin fritters. And we finished off with coffee and creme brulee. A serious feast!
