did you survive the holidays?

And just like that the winter school holidays are done and dusted. What did you get up to? Although it was a bit of a whirlwind – I’m such a stickler for routine and holidays are not about routine – it was all great fun. Bailey had to have grommets put in, and she was so brave. She said afterwards that her ears felt very ‘sensible’. I took the littles to spend a week with my sister and her great, big crazy family in Durban. We had no agenda and just decided each day what we felt like doing. Highlights included hiking in Krantzkloof, spending the morning on the beach skipping through rock pools when it was pouring with rain back home, visiting Mini Town (especially for Robert), riding the cableway over the promenade (terrifying!), playing racket ball and running with my nephews and brother-in-law (thanks sis for babysitting!), visiting my niece at her waitressing job and having her serve us (how to make me feel old) and just hanging out with my special family.

Here’s a video that my clever niece made of our one morning in Durban. It captures the fun perfectly!

And last week, back home, we spent a lovely rainy Friday afternoon at Cafe Paradiso. The mamas drank wine and managed to actually have a conversation, while all the kids were whisked off to the kitchen to make their own pizzas. Such a great idea and the kids loved it. And if they’re not in the mood for pizza they can also do biscuits or gingerbread men.

are you a sneakerhead?

Autumn is here, winter is coming… And that means a wardrobe update! This year it’s all about the sneaker for us. We still love our boots, but to be practical, as mamas who still want to look stylish, it’s sneakers all the way.

Last year Liza switched between a very old pair of pink Adidas trainers and an apple green pair of Reeboks, but this winter it’s time for an update. Emily’s just bought a pair of Supergas (see below) and she can’t believe it took her so long. They have barely left her feet since. She wears them with everything from jeans to office-style LBDs – basically her wardrobe has been revolutionised, in fact her entire ‘look’ on a day-to-day basis. Liza is still on the hunt!

What’s your favourite pair and how do you wear them?

winter skin savers

My skin is so sensitive, and sometimes I feel like I’m still dealing with issues I dealt with 20 years ago, now just including the new issues (fine lines, wrinkles!). Because of this I’m always weary to try new products on my face, but these amazing products I’ve been using recently have been great…

La Prairie Anti-Aging Rapid Response Booster and Foam Cleanser

The Anti-Aging Rapid Response Booster is designed for both women and men. It’s a smooth, lightweight serum that is proven to reduce fine lines by 39% and deeper wrinkles by as much as 42%, within two weeks. The serum contains rare, powerful ingredients that not only plumps the skin, but helps to remove dead skin cells too. I’ve also found that this rich, creamy foam cleanser leaves my skin feeling sparkly clean and soft after use. Ultra luxurious!

Letibalm Nose and Lip Repair Balm

My lips always suffer when the seasons change, and even during winter when it’s really warm one day and cold and rainy the next. They get dry and cracked so quickly! This balm is so super moisturising that it stays on and creates a protective layer to keep my lips soft. The great thing is I can use it on my nose and the sensitive skin between my lips and nose too. I’m also using Letibalm Paediatric on Bailey, especially when she goes to bed at night and her little nose is blocked. It helps to keep her lips from drying out too badly. You can find Letibalm at Dis-Chem, Pick n Pay and leading pharmacies.

Africology Chamomile Body Balm

I love Africology so much, and this Chamomile Body Balm is just amazing. It’s a thick paste, perfect for those extra dry spots like heels and elbows but also beautifully nourishing for the whole body. You could add a bit to your hot bath before bedtime – the chamomile is the perfect calming aid to leave your body and mind feeling relaxed and restored.

Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Firming / Sculpting Eye Creme

I’ll admit, I haven’t been very good with taking care of the delicate skin around my eyes. Earlier this year, it was dry and flaky and the lines around my eyes were even more prominent. I had to do something pronto. I’ve used Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair with brilliant results, so I opted for their eye creme too. The Resilience Lift has dramatically improved the skin around my eyes. Every night before bed, I dot a little under and around my eyes and it’s made a visible difference!

nice knits

We are delighted that the sunshine is back, we weren’t quite ready for all that rain just yet. But it did get us thinking about our winter wardrobes, hence Emily’s post yesterday. We always seem to wake up late when it comes to transitional season dressing – it just doesn’t feel right buying thick, woolly jerseys when you’re dressed in a summer frock and dying of heat. But we’re actually quite excited to get our paws on this season’s new knitwear. There seems to be a lot more variety… colours, polka-dots, textures, ribbing, quilting, prints.

These are just some of the beautiful knits available at Poetry and Old Khaki this season.

what are you wearing this winter?

I’ve always struggled with my winter wardrobe. Working from home it’s so easy to just stay in your dressing gown all morning and then you’re just too cold to bother looking nice, so it’s the same old thing day in day out.

*shudder*

I am dreading it if I’m honest. There is something so desolate about Cape Town in the winter… the houses are not geared up for it and neither are we, but this year I’m going to prepare myself with a few key looks that will make me want to get dressed in the morning (as opposed to halfway through the afternoon).

addicts for earth addict

Here’s another repost from what we lost.

We really, really like Earth Addict‘s new winter range designed by Karen Ter Morshuizen of Lunar. There are some very cool pieces, like the high-waisted wool pants Emily is wearing and the drop-crotch tapered pants I am wearing. Along with these new pieces are the classic vests, leggings and tunics. The winter colour palette is also quite beautiful… think charcoals, mustards, greys, off whites. Get to your nearest Earth Addict store to see the rest of the range. There’s a beautiful leather handbag I’ve got my eye on, and Emily is coveting the wrap jersey. And of course, there’s Earth Child, which we can never resist!

Thanks to Rebecca Groves for getting such great pics of us and for putting up with our fussing and total awkwardness in front of the camera!
